Pre-lamb drench solutions

Cydectin Long Acting Injection

Why use Cydectin LA?

Cydectin Long Acting Injection for sheep

Cydectin LA provides higher potency as well as longer protection than Cydectin Oral. Cydectin Long Acting Injection is ideal for controlling worms and reducing egg output from ewes around lambing time. It fits perfectly into the peri-parturient period giving protection to the ewe throughout this susceptible time. By protecting the ewe she not only has lower egg output thus reducing the contamination of the ewe flock and lambs but also she is less infected by worms. Her appetite will be better, she can digest and absorb her food better, she is expending less effort on trying to mount an immune response thus she will maintain her weight better and produce far more milk for her growing lamb. Administering Cydectin LA pre-lambing also means cleaner pastures reducing the major source of worm eggs for the year and thus reduces exposure of lambs to internal parasites for well beyond the period of efficacy of their mothers drench.

Cydectin Long Acting Injection offers:

  • More potent than Cydectin Oral

  • Longer worm protection
    • At least 91 days control of barber’s pole worm (Haemonchus contortus)
    • At least 91 days control of small brown stomach worm (Teladorsagia (Ostertagia) circumcincta)
    • Up to 49 days control of black scour worm (Trichostrongylus colubriformis)
    • Up to 4 months protection against severe challenge by barber’s pole worm
  • Control of internal parasites

Cydectin LA contains moxidectin the most potent of the macrocyclic lactone (ML) family. It has shown efficacy against a number of ivermectin and abamectin resistant strains of barber’s pole worm and Teladorsagia (Ostertagia) spp.

It is also effective against benzimidazole and levamisole resistant strains of H. Contortus (Barber’s Pole worm), T. Colubriformis and T. Circumcincta (Ostertagia).

  • Reduced drenching frequency

Cydectin Long Acting reduces drenching frequency which saves time, labour and reduces selection pressure for resistant worms.

  • Cleaner pastures

Cydectin LA protects pastures against re-contamination with eggs for:

    • At least 107 days for barber’s pole worm (H. Contortus)
    • At least 112 days for small brown stomach worm (T. (Ostertagia) circumcincta)
    • Up to 70 days for black scour worm (T. Colubriformis)

Which makes pastures cleaner for longer helping to protect ewes and lambs.

Cydectin Eweguard

Cydectin Eweguard SE B12 6 in 1 Vaccine and Wormer

Cydectin Eweguard is a convenient combination of moxidectin, and antigens of five clostridial diseases and cheesy gland. It is ideal for times when ewes need a drench and vaccine at the same time.

Cydectin Eweguard is highly effective against all major moxidectin susceptible internal parasites, including gastrointestinal roundworms and large lungworm. These worms reduce overall productivity, especially in young animals. Weight gains and wool growth can be significantly reduced. Cydectin Eweguard also controls itch mite and nasal bot.

Cydectin Eweguard prevents reinfection:

  • with barber’s pole worm (Haemonchus contortus) for not less than 21 days,
  • with Teladorsagia (Ostertagia) circumcincta for up to 21 days and
  • Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Cooperia spp for not less than 7 days.

Persistent activity is important as it will continue to kill worms after an animal has been drenched. This can help delay the need for subsequent drenching because pastures remain cleaner for longer.

Benefits of Selenium

  • Strong anti-oxidant
  • Supports the immune system
  • Selenium deficiencies can lead to white muscle disease

Benefits of B12

  • Necessary for energy production
  • Helps prevent fatty liver disease
  • Necessary to maintain adequate milk production

Combination Drenching

Combinations increase drench potency because an active will kill worms resistant to other actives in the drench.

Cydectin LA in combination with other drenches

Cydectin Long Acting Injection for sheep

Cydectin LA can be used in situations where there is some evidence of early resistance with a priming dose of an effective drench or combination of drenches. It is then recommended that a different drench or combination of drench groups should be used as an exit drench.

The primer drench assists in maximising the kill of adult worms.

Combinations with Eweguard are used for the same reason they are used with Cydectin LA as a primer to maximise the head kill. A primer dose could be Virbac’s Duocare or if barber’s pole worm is an issue, Closicare with Selenium, or Levamisole Gold on properties where these products are known to still be effective against barber’s pole. The primer drench assists increasing the potency of the treatment to maximise kill of adult parasites, thereby delaying the onset of resistance and creating a cleaner paddock.

Other benefits of combination drenches include:

  • Helping to delay the onset of resistance;
  • Managing resistance, triple combinations can control single active and double active resistant worms;
  • In conjunction with good parasite management practices, an effective drench program can increase productivity.

Cydectin is the most potent and persistent ML drench. It will kill worms that other drenches can’t and keeps killing them long after the avermectins have finished.

Cydectin’s potency advantage means that it performs better than other ML drenches against resistant strains of barbers pole worm.

Cydectin has developed the least resistance of any broad spectrum single active that has been in the market for twenty years or more (Playford et al., 2013).

Obviously, if you want the best ML in your combination program, your choice should include Cydectin.

The key factor is Cydectin’s potency advantage with comparison to other ML actives.
