the cydectin platinum cup

Cydectin Platinum is a highly effective, persistent combination drench that can significantly improve cattle growth. To demonstrate these results are achievable on farm, in commercial enterprises, Virbac is running a proof-of-concept campaign – The Cydectin Cup.

Beef producers from across New South Wales and Queensland will be invited to participate in the Cydectin Platinum Cup. Participating cattle producers will collaborate with their Virbac Area Sales Manager (ASM) to assess the level of drench resistance on their property (animals/paddocks) using a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) treated with Cydectin Platinum. Following this, the growth of the cattle will be monitored for up to 60 days.

The Cydectin Platinum Cup aims to demonstrate the benefits of transitioning from older, ineffective single-active drenches to a highly effective and persistent option like Cydectin Platinum.

Prizes to be won

Participants could win great prizes including a Land Watch Station Manager (PTZ) 4G camera system valued at $6,600, and Virbac Animal Health Pack containing Cydectin Platinum 5 L, Multimin Chrome 500 mL, and Websters 7 in 1 Vaccine for cattle 500 mL valued at $4,500.

To measure the success of the Cydectin Platinum drench, participating producers will be reporting on:

  • Faecal Egg Count Reduction Tests (FECRT)
    • Tested at Day 0 and Day 14
  • Weight Gain
    • Measured by averages on Day 0, Day 15, Day 30 and Day 60 using an in-paddock weighing system (scale).

A panel of judges will assess each producer, and two winners will be announced in February 2026 – one from New South Wales and one from Queensland.

    Tom Mulligan

Ban Wyong Station - Ben Lomond, NSW

Tom’s family moved to Ban Wyong Station in the 1960s from New Zealand, initially running a predominantly sheep operation, focused on Merinos and fat lambs. Over time, the enterprise evolved, and they now run around 1,000 trade steers alongside their home-bred cattle. Since expanding their operation, Tom acknowledged a need for tighter control of worms and liver fluke. Joining the Cydectin Platinum Cup, Tom put forward 358 crossbred steers for the program.

Results: “Joining the Cydectin Platinum Cup has proved to be a big benefit for my herd,” Tom explained. “It hasn’t just been about the initial weight gains we were looking for – the testing actually uncovered an underlying issue with fluke that would have held us back in the long run.” Tom has been able to put a treatment plan in place, which includes Cydectin Platinum used in conjunction with Nitrofluke, to address the roundworm and liver fluke resistance issues he had encountered with the assistance from his ASM to address the problem and protect future gains.

    Jake Cutcliffe

    Wilga Farms - Moree, NSW

For Jake, the Cydectin Platinum Cup has been a turning point in his parasite management strategy. Previously, Jake had questioned the quality of feed vs the animal itself and had realised that their induction process weren’t set up for success in monitoring the overall health of the animal.

Results: As a result of his involvement in the Cydectin Platinum Cup, it was revealed that single-active drenches are no longer working effectively in his herd. This discovery has reinforced the importance of using Cydectin Platinum at induction to ensure persistent, reliable protection. “Recognising that you can’t control markets, weather or feed, the cost to carry is an important consideration with an optimal induction being the key to fast weight gain,” said Jake. In his initial FECRT after using a single-active drench, Jake’s cattle had an egg count of 400 epg. After treatment with Cydectin Platinum, he was happy to see 100% efficacy results with an egg count of zero, setting his cattle up with the best foundation going forward.

    Ben Michelmore

    Strathdee - Strathdee, QLD

Benn runs a cropping and cattle trading enterprise in Toorweenah, NSW, currently trading 500 angus steers. As part of the Cydectin Cup, Benn put forward a group of trade Angus steers averaging 378 kg. Each animal was treated with Flukazole C and Cydectin Platinum Pour-On, and faecal egg counts were recorded on day zero at 96 epg.

Results: Egg counts were reduced to 0 epg 13 days after Cydectin Platinum Treatment. Since the treatment Benn has been encouraged by the progress he’s seeing. “It’s been really positive to see the steers putting on weight since starting the Cup,” he said. “It gives me confidence that the treatments are working and that the cattle are on track to continue to perform well going forward.” For Benn, the results reinforce the value of a consistent parasite management approach and give him confidence his herd is performing to its potential.
